[comp.os.msdos.misc] Long File Names under MSDOS?

ryan@neon-tetra.Eng.Sun.COM (Michael Ryan Ginn) (02/23/91)

I'm interested in either un-tar programs for the IBM PC which are capable of
dealing with long filenames in a reasonable fashion, or in some kind of DOS
add-on which allows one to manipulate files with long names.

From my University days, I have some files I'd like to put on a PC, and I'd
rather not go through 2000 files and hand-edit them into a format DOS can deal
with. Has anyone heard of a solution to this sort of problem?

Does OS/2 let you deal with long file names?

I use MSDOS version 4

OS/2 allows long (up to 254/255 chars) on an HPFS file system. It's wonderful!
I have moved several programs from UNIX systems with no real trouble, other
than preserving the names during the transfer.

The HPFS is accessible from the DOS emulator in OS/2, but not from DOS 4.
I heard a rumour that there is an update for DOS so that it can understand
(read only?) HPFS volumes but I have no real knowledge of this.

DOS utilities won't automatically handle long names on OS/2, though.

Move to OS/2! It's not that expensive, it's surprisingly fast, and you get
all sorts of nice goodies.

Another wonderful thing is that HPFS allows you to use lowercase filenames
(although they aren't case sensitive for access). It's great for those of
us who don't like file directories YELLING at us in uppercase... :)
