[comp.os.msdos.misc] 4DOS Question

cs481121@umbc5.umbc.edu (cs481121) (12/18/90)

Hi. Is anyone out there using 4DOS with 3+OPEN? Just as the 4DOS
manual stated, when I try to execute the LOGON program my machine
hangs. The 4DOS manual suggests using NET LOGON followed by a LOGIN
but unfortunately this does not work. I've tried running LOGON under
COMMAND.COM by using COMMAND /C LOGON but the machine still hangs.
The only thing that seems to work is the "last resort" mentioned in
the manual (i.e. boot up with COMMAND.COM, run LOGON, and then load
4DOS with the cost of an additional 4-5K of memory). Yes, this works
but I'd like to know if anyone has discovered a better solution. If
it helps, I'm using 4DOS version 3.01A. Thanks!

There's been so much talk about 4DOS lately, I thought I'd give it a try.
On firing it up I received the somewhat scary message "Warning !! - the
file c:\4dos.com has been modified." The system proceeds to come up in a
usable state when I press Enter.

What is the significance of this message. Do I have a corrupt copy of
4DOS? I am using the files 4dos302.zip and 4dos302u.zip from the garbo
mailserver. Has anyone else noticed this problem?

It would be 'scary' to me, too. Look around for something that might
have patched whatever's defined in COMSPEC. Try running a virus scanner
and see what gives.

I bet you are usinf the F-OSCHK which is a part of the
F-PROT virus removal package. F-OSCHK is the one which
calculates checksums for certain stuff, one of which is
the command interpreter. When you chang it and forget
to update the checksum, you get that message. Nothing
to be scared of, just update the checksum..

How do I know? Khrm.. it did happen once to me, too.. :-)
