[comp.os.msdos.misc] Wanted: simple network for 2 PC's

hendrik@cca.vu.nl (Hendrik te Winkel) (04/22/91)

Hello there,
This is a posting regarding a question concerning a
small registration desk where they register customers.
They have 2 PC's and a database program which works well, but not
simultaneously. A problem that must have been dealt with before.
They need some sort of application that controls the database and
the 2 pc's, so some sort of network like PC/Link. They are not at
all happy with PC/Link though, it doesn't give them good file locking
and printing facilities, and it hangs all the time.
So let's state the questions:

1) Does there exist some PD program to make a small network from
2 PC's and one printer? The program must handle file locking and
preferably shared printers. Over a serial line.
What they need is that the application, run on both PC's,
can access one datafile, located on one PC. During
the access from PC1, PC2 must be stopped from accessing the file.
2) Has someone info on commercial programs as the like? Or experience
with such programs? Who knows about Lantastic! ?

We have access on the Internet, so a ftp site and a filename is
welcome too!
Thanx for listening, hope to hear something soon!
Hendrik

Not exactly what you've asked for, but try "The $25 network", sold (guess at
what price!-) by "Information Modes", PO Drawer F, Denton, TX 76202,
(817) 386-3339 (also tech support) or (800) 628-7992 (orders only); 18 months
ago I installed one (an older version than today's, I guess) to network
my father's office (a physician - PCs used for word processing and databases),
and NEVER, but NEVER, did it give ANY problem whatsoever! I just WISH, oh
HOW I wish, that Imodes had a Unix version, so I could do the same thing in my
home rather than zmodeming or floppy swapping back and forth, even if it should
cost 10 times as much...
