This posting went out to the ARPA side of the Info-Hams list during the period when the USENET gateway was down, so I'm posting a copy on the USENET side now. If you see a duplicate copy, my apologies. I have a Hy-Gain Galaxy R-530 shortwave receiver, which right now is in need of repair. (It's a phase-lock circuit, which now won't lock, which I assume is due to component aging or alignment problems, and so it cannot tune any frequency and is worthless unless fixed. Since it was a $900 radio, I can't bring myself to just junk it.) Anyway, the last time I had it worked on (due to a lightning strike that sent a surge thru the power lines and fried its innards), I had sent it back to the factory. This was a decade or so ago. Since then, Hy-Gain had been taken over by Telex. I wrote the factory last year and got the response that they no longer had the spare parts in stock and could not service the receiver any more, but they referred me to two possible sources for this service. I list them below. What I was wondering was if anyone on the net has ever dealt with either of these firms, or knows anything about them? If you have any info, either by personal experience or by third-hand rumor, whether it is positive or negative, please let me know. Both of these places are far away from me, and I'll have to ship the receiver UPS to either of them, so I can't investigate myself. (I'm in St. Louis, MO, by the way.) The firms are: CW Electronics, 800 Lincoln St., Denver, CO 80203 (303)832-1111 Jack Lingeman, 2223 So. Stuhr Rd., Grand Island, NE 68801 (308)382-3519 Also, if anyone has any recommendations for "favorite" repair shops, or those with a good reputation for working on esoteric ham gear (quality of work is more important than rates charged), I'd like to hear them!
