[comp.os.msdos.misc] ZIP,ARC, and easiest way to do this

carty@dteng1.enet.dec.com (Hugh Carty) (05/20/91)

This is probably a very basic MSDOS question.
I see a lot of files on ftp sites of the form foo.arc,foo.zip etc..
I can make out these are compressed files.

I don't have any of these utilities on my PC.Don't have PC on the net.
Have unix R3000 machine on net.

Can I copy these files to a directory on this machine.,and also where
is the arc,zip
 utilities to copy aswell.

Then is kermit the only way to copy from the Unix box to the PC and is
there a version
of kermit for 4.3 BSD unix.

 1. need ARC,ZIP programs.

 2. copy to unix machine.

  3. Copy unix supported kermit to unix.

  4. Copy using kermit the ARC,ZIP programs to the PC.

   5. Copy the ms-dos ****.arc programs using kermit from the unix box.

6 run arc x filename in directory on DOS.

Is this on the right lines and could someone help in some of the
above,especially

   1 and 3.

This is from a very new msdos user,so smart-ass replies are even tolerated.

The MsDos archivers are available for example from the /pc/arcers
directory, and the Unix counterparts from /unix/ts directory at our
anonymous ftp site, and from many other ftp sites as well. If you
don't know how to go about figuring out how to transfer and handle
archived files, you are welcome to email for our prerecorded
instructions as a starting point.
