I've run into two problems running Windows 3.0 under DOS 5.0 that the folks at Microsoft are still scratching their heads over. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 1. Windows will not give programs EMS if EMM386 is used with NOEMS It seems that HIMEM, EMM386, SMARTDRV, and RAMDRIVE were taken out of the Windows development group and handed over to the DOS folks for the new DOS release. The DOS guys then made some changes that Windows doesn't quite approve of. Neither support group has any explaination for the above problem, althought the Windows group did suggest that there was too much stuff being loaded high for Windows to find a 64k page frame to use. I've checked this out, it's not the problem. Anybody seen this on their machine? 2. Logical drives setup by DRIVER.SYS do not appear in Windows. Again, neither support group has an explaination. I've been setting up an extra logical drive letter for my floppy (A:) to make floppy to floppy transfers easier. This works fine from DOS (COPY A:* D:*, etc.), but the Windows File Manager will not recognize the logical drive. It doesn't even put up an icon for it. What's really weird is that it does show my RAMDRIVE logical so that I end up with icons for A:, B:, C:, and _E:_, but no D:. Specifying the drive letter D: during a COPY or MOVE command doesn't work either. Any ideas? Thanks, Dan. dan@wystan.bsd.uchicago.edu
