[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] 5 1/4 drives on an AT ... HELP

cassirer@batgirl.rtp.dg.com (Fred Cassirer) (06/28/90)

I've just picked up an AT with a Chips 'n Tech. chipset. I've got two
5 1/4" drives (not sure if they are 1.2 or 360k). I've got a 3 1/2" 1.4MB
drive with a dtk Mini/Micro-4 FDC.

Every time I hook up either of my 5 1/4's I get either a FDD failure or
I get an error trying to read the drive. The motor and arm move when I
reset the machine, but it never attempts to seek. I can't believe that
both of these drives are bad. One is from an Amiga 1020 (the pwr supply
died but i'm sure the disk is ok) and one is a Matsushita FMD00610B4.

I've successfully gotten a Qume 360K drive to work. There are quite a few
more jumpers on the Matsushita and the Amiga drive, besides drive select
there is a row labeled:

 	MM
 	MS
 	OA
 	DA
 	LA

A triple jumper labeled DD SP and a 3 spiker at the end of the drive select
 row labeled DS/MX.

On the Amiga drive there are 4 sets:

DS ...
D0 ..
D1 ..
D2 .. 9 TP 4
D3 .. ......
DA ...

HH ..
HS .. TP
HL .. ...
HM ..
3 .. MM
0 .. MS

Does anyone have any idea how I should be hooking these things up?

Both drives power up fine, I've been trying to hook them up as drive B, with
the 3 1/2" as drive A. I've selected the 360K drive in the setup menu
and as I understand it, I'm not using the Bios on the FDC so the jumper settings
are ignored (it has options to select drive type if you use the FDC Bios).

						Thanx in advance

Also, I've got a Rodime 204E (44MB I think) that kicks out of my WD XT
controller setup with a status of 80. The select light comes on but it
never goes out. Also, there doesn't seem to be any jumpers to set the
drive address ....
