[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] VGA card clashes with extended memory

pjt@cpac.washington.edu (Larry Setlow) (07/05/90)

I recently bought and installed a 2 the Max 16-bit VGA card (I only
have a mono monitor, but it was too cheap to pass up). My problem is
that it screws up my extended memory: if I try to use a ramdisk, the
ramdisk fails (Data error on drive E: abort, ...), but as part of
failing it seems to confuse the display card (the card forgets where
the cursor should be, primarily, though I think I've seen other
problems that point me in this direction). Is my card busted? Am I
an idiot? Has anybody seen anything like this before? Should I take
the card back and beat on the store's head?

The card uses the Oak chipset if that means anything or matters, and I
couldn't get it to work except in 8-bit mode (I'm pretty stupid about
hardware, and the manual wasn't particularly useful).

Help, anybody? (as always, I'll summarize if it seems warranted)
