[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] DISK Problem

After the IBM PC/AT (a real one) was turned on and memory check completed
(saying 00640 KB OK), there was a long (probably a minute) pause before
the following message was displayed:

     1780-Disk 0 Failure

I was able to boot from drive A after pressing the F1 key as directed.

Any comments/suggestion as to what could be wrong is greatly appreciated.
