[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] **** 5 ***** megs with NEAT / AMI ?

barthe@hpuxa.ircc.ohio-state.edu (Olivier Barthelemy) (07/16/90)

Hi. I just bought 4 1-meg SIPPs for my 386/20. It has a NEAT chipset, and
ab AMI bios.

The SETUP386 program, which I use for setting up my memory configuration,
includes only setups for a limited number of memory configs. 5 megs
(4*1meg + 4*256) is not among them. Does anyone know how I can write
my own config file ?

Also, how can I access the memory between 640 and 1 meg ? it is counted
during the boot, but then I lose access to it !

Thanks for your help.

Olivier

There are several flavors of AMI. If yours gives the option of
entering SETUP by pressing DEL while it boots, then it may be like the
three versions I've used... in which case if 4x1M + 4x256k isn't an
option, then 4x256k+4x1M should be. One of them is, I've used that
configuration for testing.

Forget the 384k, or use it for shadow ROM if you run DOS. You can make
the system do strange thiongs trying, but I've never seen it work with
over 1MB.

As someone who has studied the C&T NEAT data sheet, I assure you that if
you have more than 1 megabyte, the only thing you can do with the 384K
is use it for shadow ram. The NEAT chip set does not support any other
use.

The original question was how to use the memory for programs. I said
you couldn't do it with more than 1MB. Are you agreeing with me, or are
you correcting what you thought I said?

In any case we agree, he can't do it.

I'm agreeing and amplifying on what you said. You qualified your
posting with something to the effect of "I've never seen it done",
I'm adding that according to the data sheet, it can not be done.

phil@brahms.amd.com (Phil Ngai) (07/27/90)

I would like to clarify my posting on this. The NEAT chipset
allows a system with 1024K to use 384K as either shadow RAM or
extended memory. Systems with more than 1024K can only use the
384K as shadow RAM or disable it completely. The 384K is NOT
available as extended memory, where extended memory is the
technical term for memory above 1 meg and not the general meaning
of "extra".

The original question was "can you use it for programs"? The
answer is in many parts because there are so many types of
programs. You can not use it for programs that use extended
memory such as MS Windows 3.0. You can use it for BIOS code
as shadow RAM and with certain software including but not
limited to Quarterdeck's QRAM and RYBS's product (whose name
I forget) you can also load device drivers and buffers
etc in the shadow RAM area.
