I am working with a program that reprograms the 8253 time register chip in order to extract 1 millisecond timing accuracy from an XT. Under normal termination, the chip gets reprogrammed to Mode 0, and all original values are restored. My question is: What happens if the 8253 is NOT reprogrammed? In what way(s) does the computer run wrong? Can it create disk errors?
