[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] PC/AT Memory Size Error

abc@adm.BRL.MIL (Brinton Cooper) (08/02/90)

Tonight, I installed the Everex "RAM 3000 Deluxe AT Memory Expansion
Board" in an IBM PC/AT. Upon I set the switches according to the
software delivered with the board and checked them against the prose in
the manual. The AT has 512K on board. The set-up is as follows:

	Existing BASE RAM: 512K
	Existing Extended Memory 0K

BASE memory to be added:	128K
Extended memory to be Added	384K

EMS Memory to be Added 0K

There are 512K bytes of 80ns memory on the board.

The board passes the memory test administered by the software delivered
with it.

Upon COLD BOOT, the machine counts and reports OK 1024K of RAM -- TWICE.

Then, however, it reports "164-Memory Size Error-(Run SETUP)" and asks
for the F1 key to resume the boot sequence. This happens on warm boot
as well.

Setup program reports 512 of Main Memory and 512K of extended memory.

CHKDSK reports 655360 bytes total memory.

	1. Why do I get this "memory size error" on boot?

	2. What is CHKDSK reading for a memory report and why is it incorrect?

	3. Are the two related?

Post followups to comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware or send e-mail. THANKS!

You have to run the SETUP program for your AT (nothing to do with ram3000),
and tell it about the new memory. Ie. set it for 640K base and 384K extended
in the SETUP program. This modifies the non-volative CMOS that the BIOS
looks at on reset to determine how much memory it has (rather than simply
looking for memory, it must be told about it. silly.).

I would be very suspicious about the current setting, however. Are you
100% positive that there really is NOT 512K extended already on the motherboard?

Have fun!
