[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] OK, Austin's out - what DO I buy?

BREESE-D@osu-20.ircc.ohio-state.edu (mr whoopie) (08/03/90)

From the responses I got on the Austin 386/25, I'm guessing it's not
a best buy. So I'm opening the door for suggestions. What computer
should I buy? Here are my guidelines: should be a 386SX or 386, at
least 40 MB fixed drive, VGA, MUST have 1.44 MB 3.5'' drive. Speed
is not my main consideration - price and reliability are. I can
spend around $2500-3000 (a little more if a monitor is included).

E-mail me and I summarize and forward to anyone who's interested.

Northgate!

(I've purchased two 20mhz '386 machines from them. Both worked right out
of the box, one on DOS 4.01, one on DOS 3.3. Came with both 3 1/2 and 5 1/4
high density diskette drives, and a driver to improve using them at low density.
65MB hard disk, 1MB memory, Norton SI=21, monochrome monitor, for around $2600.)

Probably a bit late, but I recently purchased a 386SX box from Austin
(their 'winstation' that's been advertised lately).

The system arrived within 2 weeks (they said 3 weeks), and ran right
out of the box - the disk was formatted and loaded with windows and dos.
I've not had any problems since.

I'm disturbed to hear how other people have faired - but when I posted a
while back, I most of the responses were positive.

John.

I just purchased an Altec 386 with the following configuration:

intel 386-25 Mhz CPU (zero wait state)
4 megs of RAM (80-ns SIMM Chips)
105 Meg (18 ms) IDE Hard drive - CDC (Control Data)
5.25 in 1.2 Meg drive (TEAC)
3.5 in 1.44 Meg drive (TEAC)
Multisync SVGA Monitor by Samsung (1024 x 768)
	16-bit Paradise VGA Card w/ 512k
	built-in Clock/Calendar
	Genius Mouse
	2 Serial, 1 Parallel, 1 Game port
101-key keyboard with plastic dust cover
	MS DOS 4.01

The above system goes for $2795. They do same-day shipping if you call them
before 3 pm EST. If you buy these pre-configured systems, they've alrealy
gone through 48 hrs burn-in test. The shipping is UPS ground (additional $55)

I've bought mine with a midsize-tower case for an additional $130.
The system looks great, works great, and I'm very happy with it so far.
You can find their ads in most BYTE issues.
