[net.ham-radio] Shortwave radio scene in India

wmartin@brl-smoke.UUCP (03/27/86)

The following blurb is from a description of the "Media Network" program
(a program about radio and communications) that will be broadcast on
Radio Nederland the first week in April. This description is copied from
the April issue of "International Radio" magazine.

"India -- Video or Radio? Shortwave broadcasters know that India is a
completely different market than other places in Asia. The audience is
responsive and used to tuning the shortwave dial. Each year, one
company, called PEICO, sells nearly 13 million radios. Still, we have
received letters from listeners asking why the Indian receivers seem to
lack the finish and technology of sets found in other parts of Asia,
such as Singapore and Hong Kong. We talk to Philips for their reply. And
can the Indian market expect PLL [Phase Lock Loop -WM] technology of new
shortwave receivers soon? How much of a threat is the growing interest
and importance of television? We also hear the views of some of our
Indian listeners."

This program can be heard in North America during local Thursday
evenings. The prime broadcast times are at 8:50 PM Central Standard
Time on Thursday (which equates to 0230 GMT Friday) on 6165 and 9590 kHz,
and repeated at 11:50 PM Central Standard Time (0550 GMT Friday) on
6165 and 9715 kHz. "Media Network" is a weekly feature program about
radio and communications-related matters. I noticed this since I have
long wondered about the Indian consumer electronic industry (something
we never hear about in the US), and I thought that net.nlang.india
readers that have shortwave radios might be interested in this
broadcast. Since I was posting it anyway, I figured that net.ham-radio
should get a copy on general principles... :-)

Ooops! I just re-read that posting, and realized that, though I referred
to "the first week in April", I did not give a specific date! That
particular Media Network broadcast is scheduled for Thursday, April 3
(in the US -- that is Friday, April 4 in GMT terms). Sorry about that!
