[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] naive question, static column RAM

neb@nisca.ircc.ohio-state.edu (neb) (08/09/90)

-----------

What is Static Column dual-in-pack RAM. Is it just
your normal every day DRAM?
Is 1M of 256 x 1K chips (36 chips) of this memory worth
$250? At least this is how much a company that sold me
my computer wants. These are 100ns chips. They are
selling me a piggy back board with 0K (for 386 ) for
$205. Is this a reasonable price?

Thanks,
Neb

No. It is DRAM which gives very fast access when consecutive addresses
in the same column are read. This can give near zero w/s access without
cache or 60ns chips. Compaq used this in some models, as I recall.

Column static is expensive. Check the back of _PC Week_ or _Computer
Shopper_ for current prices. The board is probably only available from
one vendor, who will charge you every cent you will pay.
