[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] what limits how much SIMM memory you can have on the board?

sean@watcsc.waterloo.edu (Sean Goggin) (08/14/90)

I have a AMI BIOS 386 w Chip&Tech chips on the board and a
64K static cache. There are 8 SIMM slots, with 8 256K simms in it.

The docs say I can have :
1 bank of 4x256K resulting in 1Meg
2 banks of 4x256K resulting in 2Meg
1 bank of 4x1MK	resulting in 4Meg
2 banks of 4x1MK	resulting in 8Meg

what stops me from putting in
1 bank of 4x4Mk	resulting in 16Meg

and why must I have 4 chips for it to work, is it that there are just
4 meg and address lines in each bank? If so would :
1 SIMM of 1x4Mk	result	in 4Meg
											Thanks Sean
