This is a general interest question.
My 386 motherboard (25 MHz, no cache) has a switch on it which allows
a user to select pipeline or non-pipeline for the 30387.
I have a program (ATPERF) that apparently can check for refresh
overhead. With pipeline selected, the overhead is about 35.6 %.
With non-pipeline selected, the overhead is like 6 %. But somehow,
I feel that with pipeline selected, general applications run faster.
So, what gives ?
What is the pipeline thing actually do anyway ?
