[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Bar Code Readers

rose@sunset.sedd.trw.com (08/08/90)

I don't know if this is the proper location for this post, but, what the heck.

I am doing some consulting for a clothing manufacturer, and they would like to
do inventory using Bar Codes. I know there are bar code readers that hook
directly into the keyboard or RS232 of an IBM compatible, however, does anyone
know of a stand alone, self contained storage/power, which can then dump the
accumulated data into a computer, either by floppy or serial port?

I know portable bar code readers exist, I've seen them in stores. But I do not
know whether they interface directly with a computer, are self contained storage
or perhaps are connected via radio to the storage device.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Marc

I got a few responses and I found some more information myself.

There are several companies that produce bar code readers below is a list
that I compiled:

Worthington Data Solutions 1-800-345-4220 They have a Portable Reader
that appears to do what I want (at least from there brochure). They
responded quickly to my request for information and were willing to
give info over the phone. Price approx $900.00. Total Storage 64k

TimeKeeping Systems (216) 361-9995 They also have a portable reader.
There's appear to have one advantage over Worthington, in that the total
storage capacity (i.e. how often you will have to dump the data) can be
higher, up to 512k. Price $995 for 64k 1495 for 512k. I still have not
recieved there brochure, the prices are from an ad in PC World.

International Technologies & Systems Corp. (714) 990-1880 They make a product
called PC-Wand, including a portable one. I know nothing else about them.

Intermec I have not yet contacted them but was informed they also make a
similar product. Contact via email (marcus@intermec.com).

Percon Same as Intermec 1-800-8-PERCON.

We will probably go with the Worthington system, but, the customer has not
decided yet. I let you know how well everything works if they decide to go
with bar codes.
