[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Floppy Boot Problem

reeves@dvinci (Malcolm Reeves) (08/16/90)

I've recently experienced similar problems with 2 PC's a genuine IBM-XT and
a AT&T PC6300. The problem is that on cold or warm boot the floppy drive
is not recognized. On the IBM-PC I get dumped in BASIC and on the PC-6300+,
the hard-drive booted (even though a system disk was present in drive a:).
The PC-6300+ returned to normal operation - don't know how or why but I
could always use the floppy after booting on c:.

The IBM-PC is currently unuseable (except for all those ROM BASIC applications)
So far I have:
1. removed all add-on cards and replaced them one-by-one.
2. switched disk controllers (they all work on every other PC)
3. switched disk drives (no problem on any other CPU)
4. tried every permutation and combination of moherboard switches.
I don't know what else to try (chainsaw maybe?) Has anyone experienced this
or a similar problem. The machine (IBM) is 8 years old so it could be senility?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
