[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Problems adding a second hard disk

morash@ug.cs.dal.ca (Dave Morash) (08/19/90)

I recently tried to install a second hard drive into a PC clone
with a 286 speed up board in it. The machine has an ST225 already installed,
with a WD10025-WX2 controller. The second hard drive is a Mountain
model RD-4255 Model III.

The problem is that the machine won't recognize the hard drives
when booting. I removed the resistor pack from the ST225, and I looked the
Mountain drive over for any jumpers and such but I didn't see any on it.

What else needs to be done to get the machine to recognize both
drives? (There's no CMOS, what about jumpers on the controller?)

	Any thnaks would be appreciated.

Somewhere on the Mountain drive there is a jumper that is used as a drive
select. Most drives are set as drive 0 (0 - 3) or drive 1 (1 - 4), depending
on how they label it. You need to set the Mountain drive to the next drive
number.

Because they are both at 0 (or 1), they are both trying to answer the call
and they both end up getting ignored.

Look near the connectors. The jumper may be hidden and require a tweezer to
grab the jumper to pull it off and move it over one position.
