The controller cards (generally Western Digital WD1007-whatever) have a
on-controller feature which "remaps" the drive if it has > 1024 cylinders
into a format which DOS can use all of. I believe that my 338 had in the
vicinity of 1300 tracks, by 15 heads, 35spt, which the controller
"translated" into something like 670 tracks, 16 heads, 51spt. This made the
whole disk usable by DOS. I had no problems with any utilities, including
those from Norton.

 Now I've got a 760mb which is 1630 tracks x 15 heads x 54 spt (or
thereabouts.)
