[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Problems adding 3.5" drive to an AT clone

gregg@rm1.UUCP (Don Joslyn) (08/24/90)

I'm having some trouble adding a 3.5" floppy disk drive to an
AT clone. I've installed DOS 3.3, and tried using DRIVEPARM and
DRIVER.SYS (one at a time) without any success. Attempts to read
from the drive are successful after a 5 to 10s delay, however I'm
unable to format disks on the drive.

          Device=Driver.sys /D:1 /T:80 /S:18 F:7

My clone was assembled from board level components and is using the
Smartek motherboard, Pyramid Software development BIOS v 2.14, and an
assortment of other boards from various vendors. It has been suggested
that my BIOS may not support the 3.5" drives (although it works fine
for HD 5.25" drives).

Unfortunately, Smartek seems to have either moved or gone out of
business, since their phone is no longer in service and they are not
listed in the telephone directory so I can't get any support or a new
BIOS from them. I've contacted Phoenix (I can't find Pyramid) and
they suggest that it won't be possible to get a BIOS upgrade if the
board manufacturer is out of business and recommend replacing/upgrading
the motherboard - which isn't a bad idea anyway, but I wanted to wait a
bit before spending the $$$ for a good 20 or 25 MHz 386 motherboard.

Questions for all you PC wizards in net-land:
   1) Is it likely that a BIOS upgrade is actually needed ? If not,
any ideas for what else to try?
   2) Where can I get a more recent BIOS version that will work with
my system, and what should I expect it to cost? The Smartek
motherboard seems to use Intel support chips rather than C & T
or some other set in case that helps.
   3) Anyone know where I can reach Smartek or Pyramid?
   4) Does anyone have a "canonical list" of (or suggestions for) low
cost, high performance 386 motherboards from reliable companies?

Thanks very much in advance for any help. Please e-mail responses
if possible...
