While we're talking about drives, I saw the following "good" drive prices: Maxtor EXT-4380 (335MB, 28ms, 10ESDI) $950 Maxtor 8380E (335MB, 14.5ms, 15ESDI) $1195 MiniScribe 9380E (335MB, 16ms, 10ESDI) $895 Since I don't know if I should post the company's name/##, I won't, but I will be happy to mail it to you if you are interseted. (I mention these prices simply because I'm buying the Maxtor 8380E and saw the previous post) John. ---------------------------------------- John Early | jearly@lehi3b15.csee.lehigh.edu | I was just a child then; JPE1@Lehigh.Bitnet | now I'm only a man. However, my question is can DOS use all 335MB? Assuming 15 heads, 35 sectors/track, 1024 cylinders, and 512 bytes/track, I get a maximum of 262.5MB. I have not seen any drives with more than 15 heads and I believe ESDI uses 35 sectors/track. Is there some way to address more disk space than 265.5MB without playing games? By games, I mean fooling DOS into thinking that there are more than 35 sectors/track. What are the problems one runs into (software incapatibilities, ex. Spinrite) when playing these games? I don't know what you mean by that, but I have a Maxtor XT-4380E. It has 1222 cyls. The way it is is used is with an adaptec controller which does track translation. This makes dos think that there are 63 sectors per track and less tracks. There is software on the controller which formats the disk to do this. Using it is easy. Everything I have tried including Windows 3.0 works just fine with the disk. The controller also has a hardware cache. It is an Adaptec ACB-2322D. This controller also has a jumper that can be set to create two drives from one with more than 1024 cyls, but I don't know of any one who has tried it. -- cj

If you had DOS 3.30 then I'm sure Ontrack Systems Disk Manager would also handle all these drives. I have had no trouble at all with software incompatibility, however watch out if you're using Disk Manager. Most modern stuff handles it, but some older stuff does not, with disastrous results (e.g. Norton Disk Doctor before the bug fix). SpinriteII does NOT work with SCSI drives. Hopefully it will support them sometime in the future. Cheers, Liam. -- #Liam E.
