[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] windows 3 drivers, Orchid

fsdal1@acad3.fai.alaska.edu (LEVINSON DONALD A) (08/08/90)

I have a Orchid Designer video card with 512K and all super vga
modes up through 1024*768*16. it was the card sold under the
Relisys RB5155VG label, what I need to know is if there are any
windows 3 drivers available for it and if so where I can get them.

it uses the Tseng chip set if there are any generic drivers for them

It sounds like you have the equivalent of the Orchid ProDesigner Plus.
Tseng has not yet written the Win 3.0 driver for that card (according to
Orchid), but there is supposedly one in the works. If you call Orchid
Technology they will probably be able to put you on the mailing list for the
new driver. I don't have the number off hand, but they are located in Fremont,
CA (area code 414, I believe).

P.S. Their new card, the ProDesigner II, already has Win 3.0 support.

Beg to differ, slightly. The Orchid Designer was the forerunner of the
Orchid ProDesigner (256K, with 512K='Plus') which was the forerunner of
the ProDesigner II. The Designer appears to have been more trouble, if
my perusal of the Orchid BBS messages is any indication. It probably
would have troubles supporting extended VGA modes with Windows.

Of course, if the original post was in error, and the card *is* really
the ProDesigner, then you have hit the nail on the head - they came up
with drivers for the newest card first (marketing, marketing, marketing)
and still have not posted drivers for the ProDesigner.

In any case, the BBS number is (415)-683-0327 (2400n81). I think an
actual person can be reached at 683-0323, but I'm relying on memory.

From all accounts I have read, the II is a good card, substantially
faster, and supports up to 1024x768x256 with 1Mb. Ok for DOS, people
have some troubles with Unix, X windows, etc., but then who doesn't?
