[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Super VGA with EGA mode

f89ba@rigel.efd.lth.se (09/08/90)

I understand that the ATI VGA-wonder graphics card is capable
of displaying EGA-graphics on standard MDA/Hercules monitors
as well as on CGA monitors. I currently have a mono monitor
with dual frequencies which is capable of both CGA and Hercules
graphics displayed as shades of gray.

My question is: Are there other boards with the same feature as ATI
VGA-wonder? I'm NOT interested in the mono 640*350 EGA mode, but
it would be nice to have 320*200 EGA resolution in 16 shades of
gray.

Is this feature common or is the VGA-wonder a rare exception?
I plan to buy a no-name Super VGA card (Trident chip) and I'd
like to know if it is worth the trouble to ask for the feature.
(Yes, I WILL buy a color VGA monitor when I can afford it!)

Thank's in advance.

Yes, the ATI can do this...

It is specific to the ATI EGA/VGA Wonder cards. The Trident will not
allow this to my knowledge.
