I recently purchased a 2400 Zoom Telephonics Sendfax Modem. I have a Compaq Deskpro 8086 with a serial printer attached. I detached the printer and attached a 25 pin male cable to the 25 pin female port but I'm not able to get the modem to dial out. The modem comes with Procomm and I tried dialing out with it but to no avail. I don't even get a dial tone and the modem lights just remain in the ready mode. I then used Carbon Copy and I received an error message stating that no COMM was detected or something of that sort. It suggests I check that the correct COM address is set. It's not the jumpers (no dip switches) on the modem according to Zoom tech support. Zoom tech support thinks it may be the modem or the cable (that it's not a modem cable). Any ideas??? P.S. do I need to use the MODE command? I tried to use MODE COM command but it keeps giving me the message: COM invalid command.

Interesting! I had a similar problem with an IBM PC/XT. In this case, any combination of two boards that had serial ports on them would result in the system not recognizing any of the serial ports properly. With only one board installed (even the HP board that had two serial ports), things worked fine. The boards that I was trying were : (1 Zoom Telephonics Modem (2 HP serial board w/ 2 serial ports (3 DTK board w/ one printer port and one serial port All boards were configured according to the documentation that came with them and I was very careful to not have any conflicting addresses or interrupt levels. I needed to leave the modem in the machine so that's what is in the machine now. I never did figure it out. Mike Karin Hewlett-Packard Co. Colorado Springs Division mikek@col.hp.com
