[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Looking for strange 1Mb SIMMs.

cnolan@vax1.tcd.ie (09/11/90)

I am looking for a peculiar 1Mb SIMM for a Philips model P 3302 '386 PC.

The part is very similar to the 72 pin SIMM used in some PS/2s only this
one only has 68 pins. These SIMMs have a 0.05 inch pin spacing.

The PS/2 SIMMs are 256k X 36 bit, ie. double word plus parity on each byte.
The Philips SIMMs we need are 256k X 32 bit, ie. no parity. This would
account for the lack of pins. Otherwise the two parts look identical.

Does anybody know anything about these, I'm sure they are a standard part
but Philips locally are charging a ridiculous price for them given today's
RAM prices.

Try looking for SIMMs for the MAC. Yes, Apple MAC that is.
They don't use a parity bit per byte. However, I am not sure, whether
you can get exactly the same SIMMs. I once saw a list from a german
dealer which includes 256kx8 bit for MACs. The newer MACs should
have the chips you are looking for.

Most SIMM's for PC's have a ninth or parity bit. NON-parity SIMM's are also
available, check ads in computer shopper, or other magazine. You want ones
designated 256 X 8, or 1M X 8.
