As a matter of fact, some 8-bit disk controller cards _WILL_ work
in 16-bit slots.  Just not very well.
I used a 20MB Hard card in my 386SX for about a month, with no problems.
(Except it was rediculously slow!)
It's not anything one would want to do, but it's nice in an
emergency.
Some cards won't work, but some will.
