[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Building a Micronics based system.

mra@srchtec.uucp (Michael Almond) (09/21/90)

I am planning to build a 386/33 system myself using a Micronics
motherboard with 4MB, SVGA card, NEC 4D, 100MB SCSI (conner). The system
will be running Esix. After thinking about it for a while it seems
pretty straight forward, but then again it might not.

I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with building
systems like this and can give me any pointers or things to watch out
for.

Are there any books that might help in doing this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If going with UNix, go for at least 200 Meg disk. Otherwise right from
day 1 you'll find yourself restricted. Im running Interactive Unix.

I've heard problems with Micronics motherboards. Go with AMI 33Mhz board
instead, since they have their own BIOS in their own board it has been
known to be the most error-free board as far as running Unix, Novell and
various software is concerned. That;s what I got.

NEC4D is a good choice. an alternative is Mitsubishi DiamondScan16L which
I bought but I don;t like now.

Make sure you give enough ventilation to the hard disk as heat can be
disastrous to the components.

I chose all the components but watched the dealer build it for me, so I
think it is pretty simple to set the thing up. So go ahead and save
yourself some money on it.
