[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Low level format on PS/2

cs153020@cslab8f.cs.brown.edu (Joel Scotkin) (09/23/90)

A friend of mine just bought a PS/2 model P70 (the portable) with a 120
meg disk drive.
True to IBM style, it came without operating system etc. He bought DOS
4.01 separately,
and swore he knew how to install it himself, fdisk, format, and all.
Well, the first
thing he did was to run Norton Disk Doctor on the unpartitioned disk
(only he knows why),
and it seems to have really destroyed the partition table and other
things, to the point
where fdisk refuses to talk to it - it show non-dos partitions all over,
and cannot remove
them. So, I want to do a low-level format on the disk and start over,
but he doesn't have
a program to do this, and I was hoping maybe somebody could tell me if
there is a ROM
level address for this. (I already tried the obvious ones, like debug
at g=c800:0, and c800:5).

     Thanks a lot,
      Joel

On all Microchannel PS/2's, the reference disk has a low-level formatter
and advanced diagnostics. From the main menu, press either CTRL-A or ALT-A,
and it will bring you to the proper screen.

The poster wanted to know how to low level format his
PS/2 HD.

Boot the IBM PS/2 Reference Diskette for the model in
question.

When you get to the first menu of options, press one of the
following (I forget which, the info is at work.),

1st try, crtl+A (^A), and you should get another menu.
One of the items will include formatting the HD.

2nd, if 1st try above does not work, ALT+A, stuff about
second menu above applies.

I believe ^A is the one to use.

Good luck.
later.
