I need to put a number of PCs on an EtherTalk network. For a variety of reasons we can't use normal PC networking- no Novell, 3Com, or Banyan. It has to be Apple EtherTalk. Furthermore, the network is twisted-pair, 10BaseT (latest draft). The PCs I need to hook up are all Compaqs. Some are 386s (16Mhz 386sx), and some are 486/33L (33Mhz 486). I intend to use QuarterDeck software to move as much of the network drivers as I can into the twilight zone, and to swap between programs, one of which uses extended (not expanded) memory. Any NIC I use will need drivers (MLIDs, whatever) which are at the least, compatible with QEMM. I know of the thick/thin 3Com 8-bit adapter, for which the AppleShare PC 2.01 disk includes drivers. But putting an 8-bit card into a 486 makes me want to choke somebody (probably the guy who decided not to put drivers for a faster enet card in AppleShare PC). So the question is, what are my alternatives? I've head that a Novell card (the NE2000?) supports AppleShare PC, but where's the software? Isn't it an 8-bit card also? What about a 16-bit or (dream on...) EISA card? Also, I'm not anxious to spend another $100 on each station to buy an AUI to twisted-pair box. (That's the cheapest price I know, from David systems). It's an added cost, and more importantly, an added failure point. Help! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hard experience (and I don't doubt it will be hard...) is even better. I do read these groups but I'd appreciate mail too just in case. If I get anything useful, I'll post a summary. Thanks in advance, --- Alexis Rosen cmcl2!panix!alexis ***YES!
