[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Need advice on mem upgrade flexibility

carlp@frigg.isc-br.com (Carl Paukstis,LL2-2B,5439,) (09/27/90)

I can scrounge 2 MB of 256Kx9 SIMMs. I have an 8MHz "baby" AT clone
(NEC Powermate mumble). I'd like to buy an expanded memory board and
use the free (borrowed) RAM. I'd also like to keep my options open in
case I succumb and buy a 386 toy some day.

The wife and kids (and me, sometimes) will be wanting to run Windows 3
and Word for Windows, plus ProComm, PrintShop, other misc. stuff, none
very heavy-duty. I'll be doing same, plus casual programming using
MSC and soon ZTC++ (I get paid to program all day; my home machine is
for recreational junk and learning new tricks).

Can I buy a board which does LIM 4.0 and handles 256K SIMMS that will
ALSO handle 1M and/or 4M SIMMS (not necessarily at the same time)?
Will it work both in my 286 and future possible 386? Can I get it for
under a hundred 0K (dreaming)? Should I just write off the 256K SIMMs
and buy my own RAM?

Recommendations/suggestions welcome; E-Mail preferred; I'll summarize
if justified by response volume.
