[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] VGA CONNECTOR INFORMATION DESPERATELY NEEDED!

mhorne@ka7axd.WV.TEK.COM (Mike Horne) (10/01/90)

I need some pinout information on the standard VGA connector (you know, the
funky 15-pin connector that's about the size of a DB-9). I have the
actual pinout standard, but I need information on the following:

	- There are 3 bits of monitor ID on the interface. What purpose does
	  this serve? Could someone tell me what each of the 8 possible
	  configurations mean?

Many thanks in advance!

These three bits of monitor ID are defined by IBM. They are discussed in
the Technical Reference manual for the IBM 8514/A and in "Jake and Buds"
book on the 8514/A (references given below). In case you don't have either
of these on hand the bits are :

	Bits
	654		Description
	---		-----------
	000		Reserved
	001		IBM 8507 (monochrome, 1024 x 768 interlaced)
	010		IBM 8514 (color, 1024 x 768 interlaced)
	011		Reserved
	100		Reserved
	101		IBM 8503 (monchrome, 640 x 480 noninterlaced)
	110		IBM 8512 and IBM 8513 (color, 640 x 480 noninterlaced)
	111		Reserved

The bit numbers correspond to how they are stored internally in register 42e8
on an 8514/A. The corresponding pin numbers on the VGA connector are :

	Pins
	---
	|||----- Pin #11	MID0
	||------ Pin #12	MID1
	|------- Pin #4		MID2
