[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] PS/1 vs. other 286s: Repost

djohnston@pbs.org (10/03/90)

Apologies, Net-land, for this repost but my sysadmin informed me that my
address in my signature was incorrectly listed on the initial post. I have
gotten a few replies to the original post but would really like to hear
what you have to say. E-mail to either address in signature. Thanks!

My parents are looking at buying an IBM (or clone) machine and I would like
to get some opinions from some other folks regarding the IBM PS/1. I am not
a DOS man personally, but am certainly willing to learn. I have experience
with both MacIntosh and DEC VAX (dangerously knowledgeable user, not a
programmer). Anyway, Mom has no experience with computers and Dad's
experience is limited to WANG wordprocessing (retired federal gov't). Mom
will be doing mostly word processing (she is a published writer of poems
and prose) and dad wants to learn spreadsheets and database. The question
is then: Will they be happy with IBM's PS/1? The pre-configuration of the
system is attractive, but upgrade seems to be extremely limited especially
in the upper level machine (1 meg RAM, 30 meg HD, No open slots!). I like
the Windows-type display (being a MAC-man, I would) but wonder if they could
do better with their $2K by buying a different 286 and adding VGA, mouse,
Windows 3.0, Microsoft or Lotus Works. Any comments? My apologies if the
PS/1 has been over-discussed here or elsewhere on the net.
