Are the ~200Mb optical/magnetic floppies of Next fame near to
becoming a commercial reality (including media) for PC's?

I doubt it. The 15th anniversary issue of BYTE magazine has a column
on one of these floptical drive. And it costs about US$900 for a 20 MB
drive which doesn't read normal floppy and the special 3-1/2" floppy
costs about US$25 each.

For this money, I would rather buy a SyQuest 44 MB 5-1/4" catridges
which is hard disk speed and cost competitive up to about 300 MB with
the floptical. ... As a fringe benefit, you get a SCSI controller which
can be used to add SCSI hard disk and tape drive etc. (albeit a SCSI-I).
