I just picked up a Shugart 10meg 1/2ht drive. The model is 712. I would like to put it in my XT-Clone as a second hard drive. Can someone help me with the 10 jumpers OR have a phone number for Shugart. Thanks! Mike Ray MER@CRNLNS

I have about a dozen of these drives, and have been running two of them RLL in an XT for over three years with no sweat. I even have the shop manual! (PS wanna buy another drive? ;-) Heads: 4 Cylinders: 320 (rated) 350 (useable) Access times: (slow!) Track-to-track: 16.2 mS Average: 85 mS Maximum: 175 mS Latency: 8.37 mS Spin-up time: 12 seconds Reduced write current is automatic Write precomp cylinder: 128 Max operating altitude: 10000 feet Shock: 10G operating, 40G non-operating (11 mS half-sine) DC voltage requirements: +12vdc: .75A running, 3.9A or 2.7A spinup (selectable via strap) +5vdc: 1.6A typical, 2.4A max Heat dissipation: 86 BTU/hour (18.4 Watts) If you use this drive on an AT, you set it up as a type 1 and get 10MB. If you can use a custom drive type, tell it about the extra cylinders and get 12 MB. (These are MFM numbers) The best-case is custom drive type with an RLL controller: 18MB and change. This is the configuration I'm running. RLL compatible? The Shugart SA-712 was one of the drives used to _develop_ the 2,7RLL system. There is no phone number for Shugart; they were absorbed by Seagate. (Actually, I think they _became_ Seagate. Both companies were founded by the same guy whose name is Shugart.) To use this as the second drive, you will want to have jumpers on positions P1 through P8. This will connect the internal termination pack, so remove the termination from your first drive. You will also want to move the jumper that's probably on P9 one position to the left. This enables Drive Select 2. (I'm assuming your cable doesn't have a twist in it...) Then, it should be a cakewalk to set up. At least I've never had trouble with WD controllers. And I've done close to 50 SA712 installs. If you have any problems, email me. ----------------------------------------------------- Gordon S. Hlavenka cgordon@vpnet.chi.il.us Disclaimer: Yeah, I said it. So what?
