Can anyone out there predict the time to turn around a passport after application. I have been told by the Post Office about 3 weeks, but wanted to check this against anyone with recent experience in these matters. Thanks Steve Wheatley inuxc!wheatley

Three weeks is a reasonable amount of time to receive a passport. There is a question on the application concerning "date required" the passport service will hurry your application if near. There is also an emergency provision for obtaining a passport (24-48 hours). For this you need a letter from your employer stating why you need the passport quickly. For more info call the Passport office.

Usually, you can walk into a passport office (in NY, LA, SF and other big cities which have one), show them your airplane ticket, and they will get you a passport in time for you to make your plane (I think you need to give them 24 hours). There was a further complication back when Laker was in business - they wouldn't sell you a ticket unless you could show them your passport. There was a way to work it out, though - my wife did it a couple years ago. =Spencer

passports can be obtained on short notice (same day for mods, next day - i think- for new ones) upon proof that you need it so quickly. this is *not* necessarily a letter from your employer. i had to take my airline tickets in so as to prove date of departure. amy heidner decvax!fluke!amyh
