[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Soundblaster vendors

geurin@cod.NOSC.MIL (Chance) (10/18/90)

I have the predecessor to the Soundblaster - the Gameblaster. I called
Creative Labs and was told that they are offering upgrades to Gameblaster
purchasers. If you mail them a copy of your receipt you can purchase
the Soundblaster for $149.00. If you return the Gameblaster card, you
can purchase the Soundblaster for $139.00 (might as well keep the card
for ten bucks - the CMS301 chip set in the Gameblaster is a
$29.95 option on the Soundblaster).

My question is: Is this a good deal? How much do Soundblaster cards
sell for from Mail-order companies? I know that the suggested retail
price is $239.95.

Other info from Creative Labs:
Due out in a month or so is a music composer for the Soundblaster called
Musician I. Selling price will be $79.95. It's supposed to allow you
to graphically edit music scores (WYSIWYG) and allow you to print
scores on your laser or dot-matrix.

Thanks!

If you check Computer Shopper out, the going prices are around
$149-$159, so you are really not getting anything for the card by
upgrading. Give it to a friend that can't afford an Adlib or
SoundBlaster. Even locally, the chains are selling SoundBlaster for
about $179.

Keep your GameBlaster for the CMS chips for upgrading your SoundBlaster.

Mail order prices for the SB go as low as US$139, and are frequently US$149.

Look in PC-Mag or ComputerShopper for specific dealers. Any where will do,
as this is a shrink-wrap product (as opposed to the average 386 clone).

On the Soundblaster what do those two CMS (?) chips do? Do some ot
the Soundblasters still come with them in place?

My soundblaster came fully populated. It was an older model of the
product. While it has the chips, it didn't have the new text to speech
software. However, it did have a better reference manual with more
technical documentation. When I purchased the developer's kit, I
received the latest software, too.

The older box displays the "compatable products" list in much larger
case than the new box.
