[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] NEED HELP AGAIN ON PC

nzhong@redbud.math.ucla.edu (10/23/90)

Many thanks to the answers you gave me. It is really a great help.
Here are some more questions that I am not clear. Hope you can help me again.

1 What does a SVGA driver mean? Is it a hardware chips or a program? If it's a program, where to get from?I mean, from the VGA company(i.e the program shouldbe like "WINDOWS3.DRV, WORDPERFECT.DRV, PAGRMAKER.DRV etc) or from the software company(i.e in windows 3.0 there should be files like "VIDEO7.DRV", "ATI.DRV", "PARADISE.DRV" etc)? If I can't get VGA driver for my SVGA card, does that mean
I can only use my SVGA at 640*480?
2 I was told that a SVGA is compatible with CGA,EGA,.. but I can't understandhow can that be. If the program was written to call 'INT 10H' it can be OK, but
most programs treat directly with video-ram. How can it run normally on a different type of video card? I know that some CGA games doesn't run on EGA,though EGAis said to be compatible with CGA.
3 Everyone says a non-interlaced SVGA is much better than an interlaced one.
I believe that. But, does an interlaced SVGA really flicker? I've never seen
such a flicker. For example, the basic IBM monochrome display is interlaced. It
seldome flicker.

Again, any help by e-mail or by news is greatful. I can learn a lot from you.
  Thanks.
