Hi! Our group bought a Gateway2000 25MHz/386 with 16MB RAM, no cache, 300 MB disk. I installed SVR3.2 on it and have had absolutely no problems with it. The board is a BTC 386 25MHz board using the AMI BIOS. Because of the above, I purchased three more Gateways, except this time I asked for 25MHz with 32K cache. I installed SVR4.0 on it. This machine hangs when running large "makes" consistently -- so it seems it should be a memory problem. This machine has a Micronics 25MHz 386 running Phoenix BIOS. For some bizzare reason, the Phoenix BIOS insists on moving 256K from reserved memory to extended memory and I cannot figure out how to turn that off!! Further, if I remove the optional 12MB memory board (leaving 4MB on the motherboard), this memory relocation does not happen. Anyway, I install SVR4 on the machine, and periodically it hangs. Q: Is it SVR4? Q: Is it the Phoenix BIOS? Q: Is it Micronics? Q: Is it the cache? Q: Can I subsitute AMI BIOS instead of the Phoenix BIOS? Any clues will be greatly appreciated.
