I just installed a 1M Swan video card into my 286, so I could display the higher resolutions (800x600, 1024x768) in the full 256 color array on my Loop brand monitor (1024x768). The problem is that even though the 1024x768 resolution works perfectly, the 800x600 is not working right. When I try entering any 800x600 mode, I get a bright flash on the screen, a quiet, but very disconcerting "pop" from the innards of my monitor, and then the actual power light on the monitor's power switch goes out for a few seconds while I frantically hit the ESC key. Then, the monitor comes back on and all seems normal. I do not do this on a regular basis. ;-) I have drivers and utilities galore, but none of them seem to do any good. I called Swan, and their "Technical Experts" acknowledged the problem: They had seen it for themselves. They still haven't quite fig- ured out the problem for themselves yet. They tell me that it should be safe for me to experiment with the drivers, despite the popping sound, but it makes me understandably nervous. I know that my monitor is capable of displaying the 800x600 mode. My previous card was a Paradise with 512K, and could display the 800x600 fine in sixteen colors. If anyone has a solution to my problem, or even an explanation as to why it is happening, I'd be very appreciative. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neal Miller | "Why not go mad?" | millernw@clutx.clarkson.edu Clarkson University | - Ford Prefect | millernw@clutx.bitnet ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
