Dear Dave - Unable to reply through mail on your shutter question so thought I'd put it here to bother fewer people then in the other directory. Two thoughts come immediately to mind. First, you could have the shutters slide into the wall. This would require some cutting of the wall studs and shifting of insulation but I think it could be done. Alternatively you could form the shutters from slats and have them hinge so that they collapse upon themselves when opened - a bit like accordion doors. Working with four inch slats, 1/2 inch thick you could cover a four feet wide window and only lose six inches of width when the shutters are open. Of course these could fold back into the wall too.
