[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] SCSI / SEAGATE / AST / DEST info wanted

tlhilde@en.ecn.purdue.edu (Troy Hildebrand) (10/31/90)

Okay, I have a few questions for all of you familiar with
PCs, SCSI, and Seagate ST02, and other peripheral devices.

My main hardware configuration is as follows:
   386sx, 2 Meg memory, 80Meg Seagate SCSI drive, 5 1/4 HD floppy

My secondary (not connected) hardware configuration:
AST Research 4000 70 Meg Drive / 60 Meg Tape drive (SCSI),
This is a model 4074, both devices in one case. The
devices are not SCSI, but they have converters to connect
them to a SCSI connector on the rear of the case.
   DEST PC Scanner Plus (SCSI)

My problem is that do not know how to go about connecting these
devices to my existing hardware with minimal cost. I have tested
the tape drive (successfully) on a friend's Amiga but we were unable
to determine the hard drive's status (it power's up, but that is all)

I need to know how i would physically connect to my system, with the
ST02. This controller card has no external connector to connect to.
Is there a way for me to make a cable which would go from either the
card or the 50 pin cable to the outside world? Or is it possible
at all with the ST02? Due to my limited budget, at this point a
different controller card is not an option.

Once I actually get the devices connected to my system, I will need
software...

Where can i get a good program to run the tape drive?

How will I format the hard drive (I am not extremely familiar with
drive formatting, but i can follow instructions)? I do not think the
AST drive has terminating resistor packs, but i think it does have
SCSI ID jumpers (What are the necessary settings for this drive?)

Where can I contact DEST in regards to software for the PC Scanner Plus?
Is it legal to copy proprietary software for a piece of hardware if you
have that hardware?

Any other pointers would be very much appreciated. Email please.

Thanks

Troy
