[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Parallel Hookup, Laptop to Desktop

sip1@quads.uchicago.edu (timothy francis sipples) (11/02/90)

I'd like to manufacture or obtain a cable to hook up my laptop to my desktop
through their parallel ports. Does anyone know what the proper pinouts
should be -- which lines should be tied where -- or will a straight through
cable do the job? Is a cable available pre-made and if so where? (The
software I have does support parallel links.) Does every parallel port
support bidirectional transfer or are there some potential difficulties
there?

Failing that, what issues are involved regarding use of COM3 in a standard
AT clone? Specifically, can COM3 and COM1 (the former an internal modem,
the latter one a port on a two port serial card) share the same interrupt?
Can they both be used if they are only used at different times (never
together)?

Thanks in advance. Please mail responses and I'll summarize to the net if
interest warrants.
