Hi, a friend has a a problem, perhaps someone can help..

Problem: Tandy 3000NL does not recognise a 3.5 1.44 Meg drive.

	Equipment: Tandy 3000NL, with :

			386sx Upgrade.
			Memory Upgrade (Currently 2 Megs)
			Mono Monitor & Herc. Card.
			HD/FD Controller. (IDE)
			IDE 40 Meg Drive.
			1.44 Meg Drive.
			360K Drive.
			Dos 4.0

The 1.44 Meg drive in question appears to be a Tandy, it has the
following cryptic numbers written on it.
	"2A9" "8790145" "TB91871805", * ANY * Information on this drive
	will be helpfull.

Story: Both the 1.44 and 360 were attached to the system board.
but would not format disketts. Turning sw5 on the mother-
board to the off position, and jumpering the HD/FD controller
to enable the FD's and attaching them to the HD/FD controller
as an attempt to remedy the original problem...
The original cable did not have a twist in it and was
too short to reach the new controller. A quick stop at the
local PC shop brought back your standart FD cable with
a twist in one end. The 360K works fine, and can format now
alas the 1.44 no - go.. The new cable? Does Tandy use a
weird type of cable.. I did notice there is no power plug
	       on the 1.44 drive..

Mail replys (or post) I'll post a summary.

The summary follow.. thanks again David.

Subject: Re: TANDY 3000NL, FD/HD Controller and a 1.44M Drive that don't work.

You must disable the floppy controller on the motherboard. I'm not
sure of the jumper settings.
The drive is a normal 1.44Mb floppy, but it gets its power from the motherboard.
That's why there are holes in the original cable before you get to the second
connector. You must add a power connector to the cable.
Alternatively, you could turn the floppy controller on the card off and use
the original one on the motherboard.

Hope this helps,
David Dwiggins
PS. Make sure you add the holes to the cable. If you don't, you will short the
power supply to ground, since the pins corresponding to those "holes"
are grounded on a 5.25" drive.
