[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] IDE HD Tests - Beware!

reichert@motcid.UUCP (Chuck KD9JQ) (11/03/90)

Just learned something the hard way. When the manufacturer says you
don't have to low level format an IDE Drive...they really mean don't!

I just got my Toshiba 100M HD and carefully followed instructions. Use the
DOS 4.01 FDISK, FORMAT or my AMI BIOS Diag Formatting. Unfortunately AMI's
Opt. Interleave Format is a big no no! Even if you stay with the 1:1 Interleavebad things happen. Took 4 trys before the format took...actually it didn't.
The Interleave optimizing screwed up the translation table and I am now getting
Seek errors big time. Luckily I'm within the 30day exchange period and they`ll
exchange the old for a new one. They can do a new low level format and enter
the transaltion table.

So for any one with a new IDE HD, just use DOS 4.01 FDISK and FORMAT,
or ONTRACKs' DM Utility. Don't run any HD tests that are "Destructive"..even
if you haven't configured the HD yet!
