[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] HELP! I've got problems with an ST4051 and Western Digital

draper@buster.cps.msu.edu (Patrick J Draper) (11/12/90)

Hello,

I am trying to install a Seagate 4051 40MB hard disk into an XT
compatible computer. The disk controller card that I have is a WDXT-GEN2
Plus.

I've tried many different ways of setting up this drive. I'm sure that
my cabling is correct.

I tried to do a low level format using Disk Manager, but it wouldn't
boot from the hard disk. The drive did work reliably in all other
respects. After that, I tried to low level format with the controller
bios, but that doesn't work. It needs a lot of numbers that I don't
have, such as write precomp cylinder (0?) and starting reduced write
current cylinder (976?).

After the controller bios does the low level format, it returns with the
message "format successful" or something like that. Then I try to run
FDISK.exe version 4.01.

Fdisk just sits, flashing the hard disk light once every 20 seconds, and
does nothing.

I've tried many different parameters in the low level format, trying to
get past this point, but nothing works. I even tried to use Norton
Utilities to change the partition table that disk manager created.

Lately, disk manager cannot even format the disk (low level). It returns
immediately with an error.

Please Help! I'm desparate .......
At this rate I'll lose all my hair in just a couple of days!
