[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Telemart/Soundblasters

stretch@EMUNIX.EMICH.EDU (Brian Stretch) (11/06/90)

I tried placing an order from Telemart today.. in short, here's what
happened:

"Do you have Falcon 3.0 in stock?"
'No, but we have Falcon AT.. is that the same thing?'
"No.." (Falcon 3.0 is a $35 upgrade from Falcon AT, btw)
"A-10 Avenger, also by Spectrum Holobyte?"
'No...' (One gets the impression that Telemart stocks old software.)
"Okay then, do you have Soundblasters in stock?"
 'Yes.'
(Finally! Confirmed the $149 price, started to give info, paying by
  Mastercard..)
'I need a second phone number.'
(Say WHAT?!?! I tried explaining that I'm a college student, living at
home, and the only other phone # I have is my BBS. No go. My only
other option was to prepay with a check/money order.. right, and wait for
that check to go from Michigan to Arizona?)

Anyhow, I got rather annoyed and told them I'd save my money. I can understand
wanting to verify identities and all, credit card fraud is a Big Thing, but
I have _never_ run into any other company with such an anal-retentive policy
has REQUIRING two phone numbers! (Yeah, I know, should have just given them
my BBS number and not said anything..)

Does anyone know of any other mail order places selling Soundblasters at or
near $149? And that sell Falcon 3.0 and other CURRENT Spectrum Holobyte
software? (And ships same day? Yeah, I know, I don't ask for much..)

I ordered my SB from Telemart and was very pleased with their
handling of my order. It was pleasant and the product arrived
quickly, correctly, and worked. I don't remember if I gave
them two phone numbers or not since it didn't bother me.

I voted. Did you?

If I remember correctly, Spectrum Holobyte has delayed the release of
Falcon 3.0 for a few months... Anyway, a good place to buy stuff is
SoftWarehouse which operates 14 retail outlets nationally, as well as
does mail order. The Michigan outlet is:

		31601 John R. Rd.
		Madison Heights, MI 48071
		(313)585-7600
		or (800)451-SOFT nationally

Anyway, I have no connection to this company except as a satisfied
customer of their Houston outlet. By the way, they have Sound Blaster
for $169, but their software is usually lower than any mail order
price that I can find in Computer Shopper.

This is truly scary since we have a Softwarehouse here in Fargo North Dakota.
Usually if there ar 5 million retail outlets nationally, the chain might
consider us...

Well, after talking to a friend of mine who ordered a Soundblaster from
Telemart last week (Monday) at 10PM EST and received it Tuesday morning FedEx,
I decided to give Telemart another shot. Tuesday evening (9:30PM EST) I
ordered my Soundblaster.. gave the operator my phone number, she still had
my account on file, and the order was completed in a minute or two. Very
pleasant. Looks like a got a bad operator the first time around.

Sooo.. next day, no package. Well, there was only a slight chance of that
happening anymore.. I'll get it Thursday, right? Nope. Just to be safe,
I called Telemart.. they didn't ship my card until THURSDAY! According
to the operator, I would receive my card on Monday. I was seriously pissed
at this point.. when I order something FedEx, that means I want it within
1-2 days of ordering, period, and if the item is out of stock, I'll order
elsewhere. But hey, I've got an 80% chance of FedEx standard air getting
to me in one day.. Friday: Nope. Saturday afternoon: FedEx arrives. THAT
was a surprise.. I'm almost positive that Saturday delivery costs "a few
dollars more", so I suppose I'll keep Telemart on my "Consider buying from
again" list. The Soundblaster was a fairly new revision.. at least one
file on the utility disks was dated 7/90 (V1.5).. a demo copy of Lotus
Magellan 2.0 and various flyers were also included in my box.

Anyhow.. Telemart has great prices, but their service isn't very consistant.
They advertise (in small print) that they ship within 24-48hrs, and they
mean exactly that. And one of their operators is an anal-retentive computer
neophyte.. hopefully you won't get her on your first order <grin>.
