My family will be traveling between the Bay Area and LA this August (I hope). Is Amtrak still running trains on the Coast route (the old Coast Daylight run)? If so, what kind of equipment are they using -- how long does the trip take, sleeping cars available, etc? Any information appreciated. Bob Warren cbosgd!nscs!rew

They use new Superliner equipment which has coaches, lounges, sleepers, etc. If you just want to go between L.A. and the bay, you don't really need a sleeper since in each direction you leave in the morning and arrive in the evening. I took the trip a few years ago and it was just great. Book early, the train sells out. Amtrak has 800 numbers where you can get info and reserve.
