[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Is it a motherboard problem??

TEB106@psuvm.psu.edu (Tom billet) (11/17/90)

I have a Tandon Targa 286 AT machine with a Segate ST225 drive. I recently
purchased a Segate 80 Meg SCSI drive and controller. The drive worked for a wh
ile in my computer (although I had some small errors with reading the drive), i
t quit working in my computer after about a week and a half. The light blinks
8 times at boot up time--the Segate Techs. said to send the disk back because
that is an indication that the drive is bad. I sent it back and it was repaire
d (i don't know what they did). We tried the repaired drive again and it parti
tioned and formatted ok but would not boot from the drive. Trying to boot a se
cond time gave a disk error and the thing wouldn't work at all. We tried the
drive and controller in a 386 and it worked fine. Also, we check the voltage
coming out of the power supply and got 11.7 volts when the drive was connected
and 12 volts when it was disconnected. Does the drive need exactly 12 volts t
o run consistently? Also, the original Segate drive was put back in and it got
ruined somehow. The motor won't even spin. The controller is good--i tested
it in another Tandon computer. Something weird is going on---can anyone offer
any suggestions/help. Thanks in advance.

                                  Sincerely, very confused computer user...
